October 16, 2009 represents the 251st. In honor of his birthday, we have decided to make this vision website and the new 1828 dictionary website live. Although both websites are a work in progress, we feel it is important to demonstrate the progress of Project::Noah and solicit feedback from the community. Please take a look around and offer suggestions to help us make this project successful.

Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758, in the West Division of Hartford (Connecticut). Noah’s was an average colonial family. His father farmed and worked as a weaver. His mother worked at home. Noah and his two brothers, Charles and Abraham, helped their father with the farm work. Noah’s sisters, Mercy and Jerusha, worked with their mother to keep house and to make food and clothing for the family.

So began the life of Noah Webster, the man often called “the father of the American dictionary.”

Webster began writing his dictionary at the age of 43. It took him more than 27 years to write it. In this first “American” dictionary, Webster introduced distinctively American words such as “skunk” and “hickory” and “chowder.” In addition, he introduced American spellings such as “color” and “music,” derivations of the English spellings “colour” and “musick.”

The 1828 dictionary by Noah Webster is clearly in public domain. However, it is important to recognize that publishers of the facsimile reprint can make copyright claims. For this reason, it is imperative that a public domain source is located and provided to do a full edit and update of the first american dictionary. Task::Access is to digitize the 1828 dictionary from microfilm from a major university library. The result will be a very large PDF with scans for each page. Although it is beyond our control if some volunteers use their facsimile dictionary to make editions, we (as a foundation) have provided a public domain source for the volunteers to use.

The first American dictionary needs to be put in a modern data format, so that more information can be extracted from each entry. As such, Task::XML involves taking the original dictionary and putting the original contents into a data structure know as XML. Although there are several technical data formats for dictionary entries, the purpose of this project is to try and capture the data structure Noah Webster used in his 1828 dictionary. As such, lots of work needs to be done to put each definition into this format. A beta demonstration of this is available on the dictionary website as the “Word of the Day.” Over 300 words have been initially placed in this XML format to demonstrate the richness of the new data structure. The database has over 60,000 unique spelled words, so there is a lot of work to be done.

The richness of XML will allow us to create custom applications (iPhone, Google gadgets, etc.) as well as puts the data in a form that can be rebuilt in digital form (PDFs of Words of the Week) or print form (e.g., Project::Reprint).

Language, be it remembered, is not an abstract construction of the learned, or of dictionary-makers, but is something arising out of the work, needs, ties, joys, affections, tastes, of long gnerations of humanity, and has its bases broad and low, close to the ground. Its final decisions are made by the masses, people nearest the concrete, having most to do with actual land and sea.

Although in many different places on the Internet this is attributed to Noah Webster, it must be clearly stated that this is not his expression. It should be correctly attributed to Walt Whitman.

His reflection and contemplation were manifested into action; the American dictionary of the English Language became his Opus Dei.

Here I wanted to show Webster in a more reverent and explicit prayerful manner. This sketch depicts the dedication of his work to God. The candle may represent the light of God, or just the light of knowledge and truth. The candle also may speak to the lateness of the hour, and hours of dedication to this work.

Here again is Webster studying and writing from the Bible. The window has been added as a light source, perhaps symbolizing the light of diety shining on his work. There might be rays of light streaming through clouds to further symbolize this. The picturesque countryside landscape seen through the window may symbolize America.

Castle, n. 1. A fortified residence; a fortress.

The moral fiber of our country is the fortress of our future success. The Foundation for American Heritage Access has a simple goal: make historic manuscripts that influenced the American culture available and accessible to modern America. A stronger America comes through the education of our children; through the preservation of the fabric of society that has defined this country; through the culture distilled upon us through our history. We should honor and respect the Christian foundations of this country; our hearts should turn to our historic parentage (Malachi 4).

The hebrew word shuwb represents this return to honor the past: שוב

The foundation for American Heritage Access [AHA] strives to capture the essence of American culture with an intent to make early American manuscripts accessible to modern society. We believe that the successful future of this country is dependent on honoring and respecting its past. In order to achieve this ideal, several projects will be introduced and executed.
